Wednesday Sept 30

Reminder:  Friday is the Terry Fox Run!

EHS Terry Fox Run: Friday, October 2

Wear your Eric Harvie School colours (blue & orange) on Friday, October 2.  This year is the 40th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and Eric Harvie School is proud to be continuing the legacy of one of our greatest heroes. Please join us and support this wonderful cause by donating to: http://www.terryfox.ca/EricHarvieSchool. Together, we can all make a difference! #terryfoxschoolruns @terryfoxfoundation

Bring you ‘toonies for Terry’ and drop them off at your school entrance door every morning during the week.  Eric Harvie School raised over 4000.00 last year and even more in previous years.  Let’s reach for that again this year!

This morning we focused on literacy. The grade 3 students completed their last SLA and the grade 4s continued with their story prompts. We began our story planner to help us in the process as we learned to summarize the books we have been reading. We are working towards creating a book zap (a summary) or a poster that explains the book we have been reading!

Today was Orange Shirt Day!

We wrote some encouraging words and tied them to our class string!

We continued to explore stories of residential schools and began to talk about what the difference is between an Author's Purpose and a Reader's Purpose. The example we did was the book, When We Were Alone by David A. Robertson.

Here is a glimpse at some of our work:

We were so proud of all of the hard work the grade 3 students did on their Math SLA today.  They all managed navigating their laptops and completed the assessment.  Meanwhile, the grade 4 students also completed a comprehensive math assessment although this was a written assessment.  They too worked hard and persevered even though it took almost the whole morning.

We had our first fire drill this afternoon.  The students did a great job of remaining calm and distanced themselves carefully while exiting the school as quickly and quietly as possible.  Way to go!

This afternoon we continued to look at the animal adaptations of an eagle.  We also read a story titles, "Shin-Chi's Canoe" about a brother and sister who went to a residential school and took one thing with them to help them remember their home.  The students then wrote about what one thing they would take with them if they had to leave home for a long time and why.

Remember to check out our Google Classroom!

We planned and began story writing today! Choose one of the two pictures below to create your own adventure!

We zoomed in on parts of an eagle and began to learn about adaptations. Focusing on one part allows us to study more in depth!

In math we continued on with patterning.
Here is an example:

Today the students were challenged to create their own Mandala on a circle template.  We were thrilled with the though and detail that went into each of their designs.

The grade 3 students started to learn about SLA's (see yesterday's blog post) and did some practicing while the grade 4 students learned about telling time in math and did some writing about "Being in Grade 4" The wrote about how they feel, what their responsibilities are, and what their hopes and wishes are for the year.  For more information on our day you can visit your child's Google Classroom.  Passwords and usernames were sent home this week.

Creating together...

This morning the students came in to find a pattern challenge for them to work independently on.  We were excited to hear how they each worked in their own way, using personal strategies to solve the problem.
