Monday Oct 5, 2020

Reminder that Friday October 9th is a PD Day and Monday October 12th is a holiday! There is  is no school on these days!

We worked on our book zap poster projects. We are learning how to summarize and retell what we read. In our non-fiction books we searched for 3 BIG IDEAS to retell the facts and in our fiction books we focused on beginning, middle and end. Here is a peek at our work in progress...

In preparing to learn about the ripple effect and how our actions affect others, we continued our conversation about ways we can create and promote peace in our friendships. We read the story What Matters by Alison Hughes and Holly Hatam and we learned that small actions can have a big impact!

We continued working on our animal collages and really focused on detail and noticing and/or questioning what adaptations our animal might have!

What a beautiful day for a Terry Fox run!  We want to thank our students for all of their hard work today and for pushing themselves to run the extra lap and also for cheering on the rest of the school once they were finished their run.  We all want to thank Sobeys and Parent Council for supplying a snack after our run.

Thank you to all of the children and families who brought in toonies/money and sent in online donations.  We will calculate it and give you the total on Monday.

Once we had caught our breath, had a snack and rehydrated, we had a lovely end to our day doing some artwork with silhouettes.  We discussed the difference between a shadow and a silhouette. We then use rip art/collage work with magazines to become colour detectives and search for the colours and patterns they want for their animal silhouette.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Terry Fox Run Tomorrow!  Don't forget to wear your school colours, Orange and Blue

EHS Terry Fox Run: Friday, October 2

Wear your Eric Harvie School colours (blue & orange) on Friday, October 2.  This year is the 40th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and Eric Harvie School is proud to be continuing the legacy of one of our greatest heroes. Please join us and support this wonderful cause by donating to: http://www.terryfox.ca/EricHarvieSchool. Together, we can all make a difference! #terryfoxschoolruns @terryfoxfoundation

Bring you ‘toonies for Terry’ and drop them off at your school entrance door every morning during the week.  Eric Harvie School raised over 4000.00 last year and even more in previous years.  Let’s reach for that again this year!

How can you hook your reader?

We worked on HOOKS today in our story writing. How do you capture your reader's attention? How do you get your reader interested in your story. We tried out a few ideas, using a sound, dialogue a question or a thought as a story starter. Here are a few examples:

Our next challenge was to start writing a beginning to a story that meets the following criteria:

This afternoon we shared the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox run video "Terry Fox, Anything is Possible" https://youtu.be/3BzyHYZgMz8

We are challenging the students to think critically and carefully about ways we show peace.  We have broken it down to peace with me, family, friends, classroom, school, community, city, province, country and the world.  Today the students took a deep look into how they show peace to themselves.
